(i)-ll-us-ion is a groundbreaking suona and piano duo founded by composer/performer Kwan Leung LING and collaborative pianist Nicole YING. The first of its kind, the duo is dedicated to commissioning new works, challenging labels, bridging cultural and musical gaps, and (re)creating new meanings and possibilities through their crafts.
Tracing back to their time at the California Institute of the Arts, Nicole and Kwan, intrigued and influenced by the experimental and forward-thinking culture of the institution, have since shared a deep passion and connection in contemporary music and its integration with all art forms. The duo embraces and is fluent in a diverse range of styles, from standard repertoire to extended techniques, electronic music, multimedia, and visual arts.
In 2024, (i)-ll-us-ion successfully completed a residency at the University of Missouri - Kansas City. During the residency, the duo hosted a two-hour composers’ forum and received seven newly commissioned works written specifically for them - marking the first compositions to enter the suona/piano duo repertoire. The duo premiered five works at their debut concert in November 2024, including Chen Yi’s Chinese Ancient Dances for suona and piano, and is currently in the process of recording three additional pieces dedicated to them.
(i)-ll-us-ion is committed to continued growth and experiment, pushing boundaries in new and exciting ways. We are always open to fresh ideas and are eager to explore future collaboration opportunities with you.
